Limitations of Existing Networks over Cloud Computing & Mobility. In today’s corporate networks, the highly virtualized environment, coupled with the surge in mobile traffic, has exposed various limitations of existing networks, which has also stimulated the demand for a new era of dynamically scalable networks. This is IDC Researchers’ views expressed in a forum at Interop this week.
Rohit Mehra, Vice President of IDC Network Infrastructure, believes: “For enterprise networks, cloud and mobility are two major paradigm shifts. The enterprise network was originally static and reliable, and can fully meet the needs of IT. However, today’s needs have changed. Because of the surge in traffic.”
Various factors make traditional networks increasingly unable to adapt to the needs of enterprises today.
More and more equipment (mobile)
Mobile traffic is now flooding into enterprise data centers. In 2020, only 95% of corporate employees brought their purchased equipment to the workplace, and today, more than two-thirds of such employees. It is not new for an individual employee to have three or four personal devices.
Therefore, IDC predicts that by 2021, more than 30 billion devices will be connected via wired and wireless networks. At the same time, users are also looking forward to ubiquitous mobile connections.

The video traffic generated by websites such as YouTube last year, coupled with the traffic of social and collaboration services such as video conferencing, have put tremendous pressure on the capacity of the network. The rise of big data and the need to quickly analyze a large number of different types of data across the network are also putting pressure on the network.
More and more on-demand access (cloud)
The rise of cloud computing, especially various cloud-based resources, has created expectations that the network is always connected and always available. These cloud resources include computing and storage services at the IaaS layer, and various applications at the SaaS layer, such as Salesforce.com.
In the data center, companies are becoming more and more enthusiastic about the cloud. An IDC survey found that this year’s expenditure on traditional IT accounted for 68%, but in the next two years, this proportion is expected to drop to 62%. Spending on public cloud, enterprise external private cloud and internal private cloud will all increase. All these demands require the network to be always online.
East-west traffic, or traffic between servers , coupled with the migration of virtual machines, and the increase of multi-tenancy in the cloud, have put pressure on the design of traditional internal networks. Manufacturers have also switched from 10G Ethernet switches to 40G and 100GbE.

All of these issues “exposed the limitations of existing networks,” said Brad Casemore, IDC data center network research manager. The new technology that helps solve these problems is SDN.
“SDN is a network method that supports cloud computing, virtualization, and multi-tenancy requirements,” Casemore said. “Workloads have changed-more and more virtual traffic, making the requirements for data center flexibility higher and higher.” But SDN is still in its early stages, and most of the earliest adopters are cloud services Providers and larger Internet companies such as Google, Facebook, Yahoo and Rackspace.
SDN products and services provided by different vendors are different. Some manufacturers develop SDN switches, routers and network equipment . Other vendors software method is used, allowing the network by the central control virtualization device.
The approaches taken by HP , Dell, IBM, Cisco and Oracle are basically similar. They all support SDN with an integrated system of hardware and software. These systems also include servers, storage, networks, and management control platforms.
Other manufacturers prefer software solutions, using software systems to control standard or low-cost hardware devices. VMware, Microsoft and IBM are the leaders of this solution (note that IBM is betting on both camps at the same time).
Secondly, there are some vendors that provide high-level network services, such as security, firewall, and load balancing. Later, there are some emerging businesses that provide professional services, such as enterprises that deploy SDN systems and provide follow-up support.

“Three years ago, we wouldn’t talk about these topics at all,” Mehra said. “And three years from now, when we look back, we can see how subversive such a concept is.”
