Holiday Residential Surcharges USA, Canada
Both UPS and FedEx have confirmed that for the holiday season, they would suspend residential surcharges, a tax attached to the invoice of a shipper for distribution to a residential home or house. Meanwhile, you can see How to Ship Packages from Home to Anywhere in the World.
The following statement was issued by UPS delivery service:
There will not be a Residential Peak Surcharge for the vacation shipping season. Peak Surcharges were adjusted for Above Target Thresholds, Wide and Extra Handling sets.
“For what is called the “holiday delivery season,” they do not yet mention a specific date or period. Therefore, we should possibly conclude as follows;
It means at least Thanksgiving week, Nov. 25, until New Year’s Day week, ending soon. However, on certain packages for delivery forms, peak surcharges will also occur.

FedEx notes that Oct. 21-Jan. 5, is valid as set out above. During this time, both FedEx and UPS will also charge gasoline surcharges.
Effective Jan. 4, for FedEx
The following new surcharges will be assessed on the diesel surcharge effective Jan: FedEx Shipping Rate.
- Additional Handling Surcharge, Additional Handling Surcharge-Non-stackable, FedEx® Shipping Signature Choice, FedEx® Receive on Delivery and Peak-Additional Handling Surcharge for FedEx Express shipments.
- Additional Handling Surcharge, FedEx Distribution Signature Options, FedEx Ground® C.O.D., FedEx Ground® Electronic C.O.D., FedEx Home Delivery® Easy Delivery Options and Peak-Additional Handling Surcharge for FedEx Ground shipments.
How are surcharges for petrol calculated? The percentage of fuel surcharge for FedEx Ground® facilities is subject to weekly adjustment* depending on the average price of a gallon of diesel fuel for the weekly published national U.S. on-highway price. Download fedex shipping calculator.
There is the asterisk since FedEx notes that there is a lag between the gasoline price index and the surcharge for petrol. Improvements in FedEx Delivery Volume
For the FedEx delivery rate increases, the effective date is January 6. Although not all details are available yet, an overview to set standards is given below.
- FedEx Express package and regular freight list prices for U.S., U.S. export and U.S. import facilities will rise by an average of 4.9 percent.
- Standard list prices for FedEx Field and FedEx Home Distribution would rise by an average of 4.9 per cent.
- Thirdly, there will be increase in FedEx International Premium® pricing
- Fourthly, there will be increase in minimum prices for FedEx Express services
- Fifth, increases in FedEx Field Multiweight® rates
- Lastly, charge rates for FedEx SmartPost will improve exponentially.
From what we’ve seen from FedEx over the last few years, a 4.9 percent average increase has been about normal. Keep in mind that this shouldn’t come as much of a surprise to those who’ve been delivering FedEx for any considerable period of time. Although there are no details yet, a transition would also be observed by the popular FedEx One Rate service. There’s no hint / current information of what the change will be as of this article.

Improvements in UPS Shipping Volume
The effective date is December 29, for the UPS shipping rate adjustments. UPS launches its modifications nearly every year before USPS and FedEx do so. A list of the improvements they have announced so far is given below.
- First and foremost, an annual net rate of 4.9 percent would rise for UPS® Field, UPS Air, and Foreign facilities.
- Secondly, for each order to adjust the billing status for a shipment, a repurchase charge would be charged.
- Thirdly, for packages containing banned articles or restricted articles that do not conform with all UPS policies and procedures and relevant laws and regulations, a prohibited item charge will apply if found in the UPS scheme.
- Fourthly, for undeliverable packages returned to the shipper, value-added services and other charges will apply.
- Also, for UPS Land and UPS Air services, the weight requirement for adding an extra handling surcharge would be dropped from 70 pounds to 50 pounds.
- Personally, I recommend you to Download an updated zip code list here to change the list of ZIP codes to which Delivery Area Surcharges and Extended Area Surcharges apply.
- Each order to file a single entry under Entry Form 86 for a shipment that usually qualifies for U.S. customs clearance under a combined manifest manifest will be subject to a processing fee.
- The rates will rise for certain value-added services and other fees.

UPS has often been the go-to for very heavy packages. So it will be interesting to see how the option of reducing the surcharge threshold for additional handling from 70 to 50 pounds pans out.
Additionally, UPS Air Freight prices will rise by an average net 4.2 percent within and between the U.S., Canada, and Puerto Rico.
