Generating your Estimate

To get an estimate for that service, you can add a service straight to your estimate or to one or more categories. Generating Estimates with AWS Simple Calculator.

Create an estimate and add resources or groups and services to your estimate in order to produce an estimate. Multiple estimates are given by the AWS Pricing Calculator, including the cost estimate for your full estimate or the cost estimates of each of the different groups in your estimate.

Groups are optional but helpful. They allow you to add several regions or organise your estimate in several ways, such as by cost centre, team, or product, to your estimate.

Note: AWS offers a trial tier that allows you to try some free services from AWS. The free tier only includes such instances or uses and only for a limited period of time. By default, the AWS Pricing Calculator provides non-expiring free levels, but assumes that you are not using the free tier and your calculation does not contain any expiring free levels.

Reading an estimate

Estimates are divided into many sections. Your calculation is at the top of the tab, and is divided into your average for the first 12 months, your total upfront, and your monthly total.

The overall estimate for the first 12 months is the total estimate for your new group and all of your current group’s resources and groups, and the upfront and monthly figures are combined.

When you set up your AWS stack, the upfront and monthly figures are how much you are estimated to pay upfront and how much you are estimated to spend per month while you run your AWS stack.

You can see within a category how much each service is expected to cost. You can use different groups for each variation of your setup and compare the estimates for the different configurations if you want to price out different ways of constructing your AWS setup.

Navigating your estimate

The Organization section appears on the left side of the page if you build groups inside groups. The section Organization helps you to see where in a multi-level calculation you are.

It always shows your estimation at the top, your current group’s parents (which may be your estimate), your current group, and any groups of children in your current group.

By selecting them, you can navigate to any visible community. If your established community is deep at more than three stages, a… The group between your estimation and your current group’s parent group is substituted.

Showing calculations

You will see the equations that the AWS Price Calculator uses to produce your estimate when you add a service to your estimate and choose your parameters. In order to see the exact math, select Display Estimate.

Best Practices for Generating Estimates

You should have a clear understanding of your specific specifications in order to get the most out of your estimates. If you’re going to try Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2), for example, it could help if you know what kind of operating system you need, what your memory requirements are, and how much I/O you need.

Furthermore, you can also determine what storage is needed, such as whether you are going to run a database and how long you plan to use the servers. However, before generating an estimation, you don’t need to make these decisions. With the service configuration and parameters, you can play around to see which solutions best fit your use case and budget.

Using groups

Your AWS estimates can be grouped by classes that you identify. A community may reflect how the business is structured, such as providing cost centre estimates, or it can reflect other methods of management, such as product stack or product architecture.

For instance, you can use different groups for each iteration of your setup and compare the estimates for the different setups if you want to price out different ways of constructing your AWS setup.

You can also produce one estimate of how much you might cost to run a website and another estimate of how much you might cost to run a machine learning process, allowing you to see the total estimate for your use of AWS.

The AWS Pricing Calculator offers individual figures for the AWS Regions. You must create a category for each region in order to produce an estimate for multiple regions.

Say, for instance, that you want to compare the cost of running servers at two separate locations, such as US East (N. Virginia) (us-east-1) and Asia Pacific (Seoul) (ap-northeast-2). A US East (N. Virginia) (us-east-1) estimate with one group and an Asia Pacific (Seoul) (ap-northeast-2) estimate with a second group can be produced and then the two estimates can be compared.

Note: Once you have attached a service to it, you cannot change the region of a group. Create a group to alter the area and then edit it. You can add services for that region after editing the group.

To assign a group to a Region

You can use the following procedure to assign a group to a Region.

  1. Firstly, Open AWS Pricing Calculator at
  2. Secondly, In the group that you want to assign to a Region, for Action, choose Edit.
  3. Thirdly, Choose the Region that you want to assign this group to.
  4. Lastly, Choose Save.
