11 Tools Every Java Developer Must Learn this Year

Top 10 Tools Java Developers Must Learn in 2021/2022. We are already in the first week of 2021, and many programmers have already begun planning for their objectives for the year, which is excellent; however, if you are still unsure about what to learn in 2021, you have come to the right spot. I’ve previously shared 11 things Java developers should learn in 2021. Not to mention that in last week article, I shared the top 5 Java Frameworks to learn, but one question kept coming up from my readers. Today, its Java Developer Tools turn.

“What resources should Java programmers learn in 2021, according to a question I’ve received several times this week from my fellow Java developers and readers? Or what are some of the best Java tools for app development? Lastly, what should I learn for next year 2022? As a Java Developer, lets talk about this questions.

I’ve been addressing this question by writing blog posts like 10 Testing Tools Java Developers Can Learn in 2021 (See here), and I’ll share some of the best Java tools you can learn in 2021 in this article.

By the way, this isn’t a complete list of Java resources because I left out essentials like IDEs, unit testing libraries, embedded web servers, and in-memory databases. For more details, see my article 10 Java Development Tools You Should Know.

This article focuses on some simple and advanced Java programming techniques that programmers can learn in 2021. Despite the fact that I have been using Java for a long time, I have not used many of these techniques, or I may have some ideas but have not mastered them; therefore, I have mentioned them here in the hopes of learning them in 2021.

If you’re a seasoned Java developer with 5 to 10 years of experience, you’re probably already familiar with these tools; however, if you’re not, 2021 is an excellent year to begin studying them.

As the saying goes, a programmer is just as good as his or her tools; one of the most critical tips for being a better programmer is to master your trade’s tools.

Tools to Learn as a Java Programmer in 2021?

Here comes the question: Which tools Java Programmers Should Learn in 2021? Truly speaking, there are numerous Java development tools available, ranging from well-known IDEs such as Eclipse, NetBeans, and IntelliJIDEA to JVM profiling and monitoring tools such as JConsole, VisualVM, Eclipse Memory Analyzer, and others.

However, in this post, I’ll concentrate on general tools that can be used by any Java developer, including both core Java and Web developers.

JIRA is one such tool that experienced developers should be familiar with, particularly if your team follows Agile practices such as Sprint, Scrum, and Kanban. JIRA has everything you’ll need to plan your Agile ventures.

By the way, the list is far from complete; if you know of any other excellent resources that Java programmers should be aware of, please let us know in the comments section.

3. Git

Another important tool for Java programmers is Git. It’s a distributed version control system that’s free and open-source, and it’s built to manage anything from small to very large projects with speed and performance.

Git is simple to learn and use, with a small footprint and lightning-fast efficiency, but I haven’t had much experience with it.

I’ve used Git to import open-source projects and examples from Github using Eclipse, yet I’ve yet to master the Git command line, which is why I’ve set it as a learning target for 2021.

I’ve already purchased Udemy’s Git Ultimate course for just $10 during their most recent flash sale, and I’m looking forward to mastering it as soon as time allows.

4. Maven

If you’re a seasoned Java developer, you should already be familiar with Maven, but if you’re a newbie or have less than two years of experience, it’s a great tool to learn in 2021. Apache Maven is a project management and construct tool.

Maven can be used to control the project’s build, reporting, and documentation from a central piece of information, based on the definition of a project object model (POM). Maven’s dependency management is another helpful function.

Since we use a lot of third-party libraries in Java projects, manually handling each of those JARs and their dependencies can be a pain. Udemy’s and Pluralsight’s Maven Fundamental solves this problem by automatically installing the appropriate JAR for you.

Maven

In a nutshell, if you’re new to Maven, Pluralsight’s Maven Fundamentals course is a great place to start. Finally, if you prefer free tools, such as books and courses, you can start your journey with this list of free Maven Courses for Java Developers.

5. Jenkins

Jenkins is a Java-based open-source automation server. It aids in the automation of non-human aspects of the software development process, such as compiling tasks, running unit and integration tests, creating documentation, and uploading objects to local and remote repositories.

It’s one of the most widely used methods for integrating continuous integration and continuous delivery in your project. If you haven’t started using Jenkins yet, there’s no better time than 2021, and no better path than Master Jenkins CI for DevOps and Developers to help you do so.

Jenkins

If you enjoy free stuff, I’ve put together a list of free Jenkins courses that you can use to get started learning Jenkins in your spare time.

6. Selenium

Selenium is one of the most common web application testing frameworks. It provides a test authoring method that eliminates the need to learn a test scripting language. Selenium can be used by Java developers to evaluate HTML and JSP files.

It also includes a range of web browser automation resources and libraries. Selenium is a must-have for everyone working in the automation and testing space. If you’re interested in learning Selenium in 2021, Selenium Web Driver with Java is a great place to start.

7. Groovy

Groovy should be the one language that every Java developer should learn in 2021; why? Since it works well with Java. You can do a lot more with Groovy in your Java project than you can with plain Java.

It can be used to write build and test scripts, as well as common frameworks such as Gradle and Spock.

By the way, Apache Groovy is an object-oriented programming language for the Java platform, in case you didn’t know.

It’s a dynamic language that’s close to Python, Ruby, Perl, and Smalltalk in terms of functionality, and it extends Java by offering succinct and persuasive syntax. The Complete Apache Groovy Developer Course is a great place to start if you’re completely new to Groovy.

Groovy

Notice that if you choose to learn from books rather than online courses, take a look at this list of Groovy Books to learn how to master this versatile method.

8. Spock

Spock is a Java and Groovy program testing and specification platform. Its beautiful and highly expressive specification language sets it apart from the competition.

Spock is compatible with most IDEs, build software, and continuous integration servers thanks to its JUnit runner.

It’s a fantastic tool to learn in 2021, particularly if you want to improve your unit testing skills, which are an important part of being a successful developer. If you want to learn more about the Spock system, Udemy’s Learn Automation with Gen and Spock course is a good place to start.

Spock

However, if you enjoy reading, Java Testing with Spock is an excellent place to begin learning about these powerful automation testing frameworks.

9. Gradle

Gradle is an open-source build automation framework that takes the best ideas from Apache Ant and Apache Maven and expands on them. It’s also Android’s default build tool.

It replaces the XML used by Apache Maven for declaring project configuration with a Groovy-based domain-specific language (DSL), making it easier to configure project dependencies and customize it to your needs.

Why did you go with Gradle instead of Ant or Maven? Since it incorporates the best features of various build tools, such as Ant’s versatility and power, Ivy’s dependency management, Maven’s convention over configuration and plugins, and Groovy DSL on top of Ant. As a result, it is the most effective build tool for Java projects.

The Gradle Foundations: A Crash Course to Gradle is an excellent place to start learning Gradle in 2021 if you’re new to project automation or haven’t used a build tool before.

Gradle

Best Gradle in Action is an excellent place to start if you choose to learn from a book rather than online courses.
