Alibaba Cloud Survey – COVID-19 in Malaysia Increases Cloud Adoption

Alibaba Cloud Survey Reveals Increasing Cloud Adoption Since COVID-19 in Malaysia. Cloud-based tools are seen by more than eight out of ten Malaysian companies as the most significant factor in mitigating the effects of the pandemic.

Kuala Lumpur, 10 February – Alibaba Cloud, Alibaba Group’s digital technology and knowledge backbone, discovered these changes in a survey conducted in November. During COVID-19, 84 percent of Malaysian companies agree that cloud-based tools or digitalization activities have been the most important factor in their business continuity and disaster recovery.

In addition, 66 percent of respondents have become more supportive of using cloud-based IT solutions compared to before the pandemic to develop their business.

The survey also found that during COVID-19, 76 percent of Malaysian respondents believe cloud-based tools have helped them cope with their company and organisational needs.

While a large percentage of companies in Malaysia are now using cloud-based IT solutions (72%), it was lower than the amount in neighbouring Singapore (87%). This suggests a potential for greater adoption and a focus area for providers.

As remote work has become the new standard for many individuals, 40 percent of Malaysian respondents agree that allowing a flexible workplace, the highest among the markets surveyed, has become the most significant advantage of cloud-based IT solutions.

New Surveys of this Year

“The pandemic has changed several businesses, advancing them down the road of digitalization,” said Jordy Cao, General Manager of Malaysia, Alibaba Cloud Intelligence. We have seen multiple companies prioritise investments in cloud-based IT solutions to allow a versatile workspace, making it the starting point for their cloud migrations.

Alibaba says they will continue to support Malaysian companies on their cloud transformation journeys as a leading cloud service provider in APAC. They say they will do this with solutions that are readily deployed, easily incorporated into the existing IT infrastructure of companies and secured with cutting-edge technologies.

More than half of Malaysian respondents (54 percent) said after COVID-19 that their businesses work more with cloud vendors for remote work, developing new products and handling workloads, suggesting their perceived benefits.

Nevertheless, companies in Malaysia were also found to be the most cost-conscious among the markets surveyed, with most reporting that when deciding on its implementation, the cost of a new solution was their primary consideration.

Opportunities for cloud providers

The survey found that more than half of the companies in each of the surveyed markets have implemented solutions from Asian suppliers, like Malaysia (59 percent ). 78 percent of Malaysian businesses agree that cloud providers deliver on their commitments are promoting this.

However, a limited talent pool, low trust among the business community and the lack of an ecosystem to foster innovation were also identified by Malaysian respondents as the biggest challenges to increasing Asian innovation, suggesting areas in the future that need to be more focused.

Alibaba Cloud opened the first local data centre in Malaysia in 2017, and has been working closely with partners and clients from different industries across the country since then.

Alibaba Cloud’s localised solutions, as the largest public cloud service provider in the Asia Pacific, include elastic computing, storage, database and network and security services.

Alibaba Cloud has collaborated with a range of clients from all over Malaysia since 2020, including CIMB, Genting Malaysia Berhad, Touch N Go, PrestoMall, Sabah Pay and Permodalan Nasional Berhadad (PNB).

About the survey

The Role of Cloud in Asia and Faith in Asian Innovation Survey was commissioned by Alibaba Cloud and conducted by an independent research organisation to gain a better understanding of how regional companies feel about cloud solutions and how they use them, as well as how local innovation is perceived.

By responding to a questionnaire distributed in November, more than 1,000 businesses from six regions across Asia, including Hong Kong, Malaysia, Singapore, India, Indonesia and the Philippines, participated in the survey.
